Sustainable Extraction
When Critique Becomes Infrastructure
Sustainable extraction.
I wrote it down before I had proof of it.
Then the sector began describing the thing without the word.
The hope, recruited. The clarity, converted. The most committed person in the room, asked to absorb the gap between what was promised and what was delivered.
I called it what it was.
Burnout used to be a personal failing. Then it was a wellness problem. Now it is a structural one.
The sector says so. Openly.
My argument, arriving without my name on it.
Naming a thing is supposed to help you understand it.
Understanding is supposed to become shared.
Shared understanding is supposed to force the system to change.
That is the sequence I believed in.
The naming happened.
The understanding spread.
It became universal.
The change did not come.
Here is what happens to a true thing inside an institution.
First it is denied.
Then it is described.

It is not.
A described harm is a managed harm.
A managed harm is a permanent one.
So the wellness stipend arrives.
The resilience training.
The webinar on sustainable leadership.
Notice what none of them do.
None of them reduce the load.
They make the load survivable.
So the load can continue.
The cure is administered to preserve the supply.
Sustainability used to describe the worker.
Can she keep going.
Now it describes the institution.
Can it keep drawing.
Same word.
Opposite subject.
The language spread.
Faster than the change it was meant to produce.
I named the machine.
The machine learned the name.
It is comfortable with it.
I used to think the line was clear.
Between naming a thing and feeding it.
I could not find the line today.
