A working lexicon from Notes from Practice : combined into Call It What It Is: "On Structure"
These terms did not begin as an indictment. They began as a feeling.
You are inside an institution you believe in. Something is wrong. You cannot say what. You reach for it and it moves. You describe it to someone you trust; carefully, in the abstract, the way you have learned to speak about things you cannot prove, and they go quiet for a moment before they say: yes. I have felt that too.
Neither of you can prove it.
That is not a coincidence. That is the design.
The nonprofit sector is sophisticated about the experience of the people it serves. It has language for harm, frameworks for accountability, systems for naming what institutions do to the communities inside them. It built all of that deliberately and with care.
It did not build the same for the people doing the work.
The absence is not an oversight. It is a decision. And decisions have architects.
Call It What It Is named what the sector does to her. The Sector of Dysfunction names what the sector is. Those are not the same thing.
The terms in Call It What It Is require her. They describe what happens inside her body, her judgment, her capacity to trust herself. The institution is the agent but she is still the subject.
The terms here do not require her. They describe the architecture itself. The design. The pattern that survives every individual who passes through it. The cycle that continues unchanged when she leaves, when the next woman arrives, when the institution thanks them both and calls it a transition.
She is not the subject here. The structure is.
That distinction is the reason this lexicon exists.
The naming is not the end. It is the beginning of accountability.
This lexicon is live. It grows with the work.
A note from the author
I spent a long time believing I was confused. That I was the problem.
I was not confused. It was.
That distinction, between a system that has failed and a system that is functioning exactly as designed, is the hardest thing to hold. Because holding it means accepting that the harm was not an accident. That somewhere, a choice was made. And that the choice was protected by the very language the sector built to sound like it cared.
I built this language because the other language was always going to protect the institution.
This one is for the people it protected itself from.
The lexicon is live. It grows with the work.
On the structure What the sector is built to do — and has always been built to do.
Structural Fatigue The cumulative exhaustion produced when an institution externalizes its own structural failures onto the individuals most devoted to its mission, disproportionately women.
Loadbearing A person, disproportionately a woman, designated to hold a dysfunctional structure together through individual effort, indefinitely and without institutional acknowledgment.
The Nonprofit Cycle The institutional pattern in which structural dysfunction is attributed to the women sustaining it, cycling through replacement rather than reform.
The Charlotte Perkins Gilman Continuum The cycle in which a structure pathologizes the clarity of the women inside it, drives them toward self-doubt and descent, until the descent itself produces the moment of seeing clearly. And then she gives it language. And the language travels further than she does. The naming is the exit. The language is the inheritance.
Structured Fog The condition in which an institution’s dysfunction occupies the gap between experience and language, making harm visible enough to be felt and invisible enough to be denied. The gap is real. The institution chose it. The fog is not weather. It is architecture.
